Avatar- the greenest film of all time?

Posted by: peggysueelliott on: March 7, 2010

I think I am one of many few people who haven’t seen the Oscar nominated film Avatar. It looks like a must-see film and one you have to see just so you can say you have. I recently read that the film is said to be one of the most successful films which has raised environmental issues amongst viewers.

The claim from the director is that it is the most successful environmental film of all time. This is completely dismissing the likes of films such as ‘The Day After Tomorrow’ which undeniably made people stop, if not scare people and actually make them think about what could happen in the future if nothing is done about global warming.

The director, James Cameron has shown his passion for the environment and global warming for many years with the support of his family who he says use hybrid cars, fluorescent lights and other sustainable products as their way of trying to make a difference.

The environmental message of the film was to make people appreciate what we have here on Earth already before it’s destroyed. Green people are hoping the publicity generated from the film will create more of a stir amongst audiences to become more eco-conscious and the hope it will generate interest into what we can do to prevent global warming.

I think once the phenomenon of the film being one of the latest fresh, innovative films to ever be released, the green elements will become more apparent and now that the director is trying to publicise that the films intentions was to make the issue of global warming more apparent positive results will come of this.

I haven’t seen it aither, but like you I am curious about the green message.

I enjoyed Wall-e and it’s green message, but most people felt in that case that it was being a bit forced down their throats.

I think that our view of avatar depends on the angle we took to interpret it!

I personally did not see this movie as particularly green. I would more describe it as a movie reflecting a real situation happening in third world countries like Africa, where ‘westerns’ come and get hold of people’s space (building up multinational firms , big industries etc ) without asking them for their opinions or caring about their fears.
